Dunfermline-based Optos, a leading provider of retinal imaging devices, kept its crown at this year’s Optician Awards in Birmingham (30th March), claiming the title of Optical Supplier of the Year for the second time in a row.

Epitomising the excellence of the UK optical community, the awards set the bar for industry standards and recognise outstanding performance, achievement and ability.

Optos, a world-class manufacturer of patient-friendly, ultra-widefield retinal imaging technology, successfully held onto the title despite tough competition from other accomplished optical suppliers.  It received the accolade based on its excellent service, quality and relationships. The launch of Monaco last year, Optos’ most advanced device, also helped the company maintain its stronghold.

Impressed with what Optos continues to offer customers, the judges commented: “[Optos] demonstrated innovative products backed by world-class education, customer and technical service. Overall a fab piece of kit!”

Manufacturing unique diagnostic devices which capture a 200° optomap® image of the retina, the company supplies its products to optometrists and ophthalmologists into more than 60 countries.

Uncovering parts of the retina that can potentially go unseen during traditional eye exams, Optos technology is revolutionary. It can help practitioners spot the early signs of a variety of health concerns, from retinal detachments to diabetes.

The company was founded in 1992 by Douglas Anderson, who was inspired to commercialise cutting-edge retinal imaging technology after his son went blind in one eye from a retinal detachment being detected too late. Now owned by Nikon, further expansion has taken place in North America, Europe and Asia.

Sharon Ormonde, Optos Sales Director for Northern Europe, said: “To be recognised once again by the industry is an honour and quite humbling. The awards showcase a raft of talent throughout the UK optical community, so we don’t take such an achievement lightly. This consecutive win is a triumph for Optos and illustrates a real team effort.”

“To receive the award off the back of the launch of Monaco is also really encouraging, as it acknowledged our commitment to delivering new technology based on customer feedback while maintaining a high level of  customer satisfaction.

“Our ultimate goal is to help our customers provide the best possible clinical care to their patients and winning this award is a welcome reminder that we are delivering on this.”
